Have you ever had a child give you dandelions? Have you ever wondered how they could possibly mistake those ugly yellow blooms for flowers? I mean they are weeds after all aren’t they? As I was throwing away another bunch of dead dandelions this morning I hear the Lord speak to me.
“How many times have you my child seen yourself as a weed? The children can see my beauty even in weeds. Did I not spend more time making you? Did I not make you more exquisitely than that weed? Yet so often you see your self as a weed and not a “flower”, you are worth far more.”
Let me tell you to hear those words in a season where there is a lot of unknowns, which to me is stressful, was a huge “gut punch”. Yes I am stress eating, yes I am still struggling with my body post child #2. (Yes I am beyond thankful to have birthed 2 of our 3 children.) However those things don’t define my beauty, even though that is how society would define my beauty. Society would say… fat, ugly, unhealthy, stupid, lazy. That list could go on and on right? Well there is something else that is said about me that I choose to listen to. A voice that says even the “weeds” are beautiful.
In Psalm 139 the author talks about how the Lord knows us (quite thoroughly). From our waking to our sleeping, to all of our ways and our tongue. The author then goes on to state that there is nowhere (and I do mean nowhere) we can go that God isn’t with us. Verse 8 states “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” So what does he mean by “the depths”? If you guessed that he mean hell, well you are correct. Even in hell God doesn’t leave us. Let that sink in before we move on, that even in the darkness God still SEES US, He is STILL WITH US!
So how does this connect to weeds and flowers? Well lets keep going, so after the author tells us (what God wants/needs us to know) this he keeps going. Verse 13-16 state
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
He created us, He Formed us, He knew us, He wrote us in his book! We are Fearfully and wonderfully made. This is what has always stuck out to me so I went to the blueletterbible.org and looked up vs 14. I wanted to take a deeper look at the meaning of the Hebrew words for fearfully and wonderfully made. Fearfully comes from the word yārē’ (yaw-ray’) which has a few meanings, some of which are
-to fear, revere, be afraid
-to fear, be afraid
-to stand in awe of, be awed
-to fear, reverence, honour, respect.
we are talking about being fearfully made… to me the only definition that fits is revere, specifically to be awed. Why do I say this you may ask? Well because Wonderfully or pālâ (paw-law’) means to be distinct, marked out, be separated, be distinguished. So why would we be feared when he made us to be set apart?
So this is how we can connect to weeds and flowers. Just as the flowers are always set apart from the weeds because of their beauty, We are set apart from all of God’s other creations! You my dear are not what society labels you as! YOU ARE SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT!
God says you are loved, worthy, beautiful/handsome, a masterpiece, ENOUGH! Don’t listen to the opinions of anyone else. Stand tall look to the Son (you know Jesus), and walk in His (God’s) truth!
Jesus Loves you! and So do I. You are chosen!
With Much Love
Stacie
